A Nightmare On Elm Street (c) New Line Cinema
It's a rare gloomy and dark Los Angeles day, so how about a post on some of the film locations from the gloomy and dark movie, A Nightmare on Elm Street? Besides, you might be aware there is a remake of this classic horror film set for release next month, so why not get into the Freddy Krueger spirit a bit early. This one is for all my former New Line peeps.
One of the most famous locations in A Nightmare on Elm Street is the boiler room where Freddy Krueger chases some of his victims in their dreams. The boiler room scenes were shot at the former Lincoln Heights Jail in east Los Angeles.

Nancy Thompson, played by Heather Langenkamp, is supposed to be living in Springwood, Ohio. However, that suburban neighborhood is actually a residential street in West Hollywood. The address is 1428 N. Genesee Avenue, Los Angeles, CA. Below are scenes of Nancy's home as they appear in the film and how the home appears presently:

For more pictures of the A Nightmare on Elm Street house visit the site nightmareonelmstreetfilms.com. In addition to photos of the outside of the home, the site also features some photos of the interior of the home from when the house was last up for sale in 2006. Could you imagine living in the home that Freddy haunted?!
Next we have the high school that the kids attend. The actual school is John Marshall High School, which has appeared in numerous films and televsion shows. John Marshall High School is located at 3939 Tracy Street, Los Angeles, in the Los Feliz neighborhood. About 6-1/2 miles away from Nancy's house.

Towards the end of the film, there is a scene where Glen Lantz (a young Johnny Depp) and Nancy meet up over a bridge walkway, to discuss their situation with Freddy. That was shot at the Venice canals in Venice, California. Walking distance from the famous Venice boardwalk, the canals are located in a nearby residential area and can be hard to see by passing in car. You will need to park and then follow the signs for the Venice canals. It's a really cool area. There are a few different canals with homes on both sides and connected by different bridges like the one seen in the film.

As always I loved reading your post. I remember the film well and loved seeing the house and school and the young Johnny Depp.

ReplyDeleteYou are awesome for posting this! A Nightmare on Elm Street is one of my favorite horror films of all time. Only the first one in the series, that is. I try to watch it once a month, at least. I want to go look at these places sometime. Great post!!
ReplyDeleteThe original "A Nightmare On Elm Street" is better than the best moments of all the sequels combined. It was a true classic horror film and they tried to use that to continue on doing horrors.
